Maybe it was that swanky 1970’s backsplash in your parent’s kitchen. Or maybe it was too many commercials for New England Brickmaster during your Saturday morning cartoons. Whatever it was that gave you a bad opinion of thin brick systems, we’re here this month to straighten that out! Thin brick systems are becoming more and more common these days, but they bring their own unique requirements for detailing and specification if you want to get them right. They look like bricks but install like tiles, so do they belong in Division 4 or 9? They don’t have a cavity per se, so how do you handle drainage? What do you do about wall ties? Well, you can relax because we’ve got all the answers. Ken Lambert will start with a technical presentation on systems and critical elements to consider when detailing and specifying thin brick. We’ll have a journeyman Mason demonstrate how to install three different types of thin brick systems on a mock-up wall, and if time permits, we’ll let the audience try their hand with the installation as well. The program will be held at Camosse Masonry, Worcester’s premiere supply house for all things masonry, and Owner Chris Camosse will be on hand to field any questions about the supplier side of the trade.
Ken Lambert is the Regional Director of Technical Services for the International Masonry Institute (IMI), former President of New Hampshire CSI and current Vice President of the CSI Northeast Region. He’s a graduate of UMASS Amherst with a Bachelor’s degree in Building Materials Technology. In his role with the IMI, he routinely provides technical advice to architects and builders on detailing and specification of masonry systems. He’s written technical articles on masonry which have appeared in Construction Specifier, Hanley Wood University/ ARCHITECT magazine, and Construction Dive, and authored/co-authored 2 books which are in their 2nd printing. He lives in the Seacoast region of New Hampshire, but has spent most of his life and career in Massachusetts. So come on out, have some pizza and drinks, network with your industry peers and learn something by watching and doing. This program is pending approval by the AIA for one Continuing Education Unit, qualifying for Health, Safety and Welfare credit.
After completing this program, attendees will:
1. Become familiar with the different types of thin brick systems available on the market.
2. Understand the limitations of thin brick, and applications suitable for its use.
3. Be able to properly detail/specify the substrate conditions receiving thin brick, and installation techniques.
4. Understand QA/QC requirements appropriate for thin brick installation.
