Soils are the foundation (literally and figuratively) of every building project! Geotechnical and subsurface issues can have a significant impact on project cost and schedule. Do you understand what you’re reading when you open a geotechnical report or exploration logs for your site? What’s the difference between a fine sand and a silt, and why does it matter? Soil conditions vary significantly from site to site, and there are many types of soil in the Northeast. Identifying and understanding the soils at you site is critical throughout project planning, design, and construction.
This month’s presentation is a hands-on educational experience and Q&A on the how-to’s of soil classification. We’ll introduce you to the Modified Burmister Soil Classification System, show you how to distinguish between different soil components, teach you how to assemble a soil classification, and conclude with a hands-on exercise where you can try your hand at classifying soils. Attendees will have the opportunity to view demonstrations of soil laboratory testing equipment, including soil sieves and liquid limit machines.
This month’s presenter, Zachary Baum, PE, is a Project Engineer at Schnabel Engineering and works in the firm’s Dam Engineering service line. He holds B.S. and M Eng degrees in Civil Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and is a registered Professional Engineer in Massachusetts and New York. Zach’s experience has included planning and observing numerous subsurface exploration programs, observing borehole instrumentation and field testing, and completing geotechnical analyses and evaluation to aid in the design of deep and shallow foundations, slope stabilizations, retaining walls, dams/levees, roadways, and geosynthetics.
This program is pending approval by the AIA for 1 HSW continuing education credit. After participating in this program, attendees will be able to:
